Reiki or popularly known as Usui Shiki Ryoho by its practitioners is an American hands-on treatment method developed by Hawayo Takata in Hawaii, USA after World War II. It is the simplification of a Japanese energy medicine called Usui Reiki Ryoho discovered by Mikao Usui in Kyoto, Japan in the early 1920s.

It is a drugless treatment method used to treat ailments of all sorts both physical and mental. In its over a century of use Reiki treatments have been experimented in clinics, wellness centres and hospitals. Although it aids relaxation, it is not a relaxation technique and needs repeated and consistent treatments on an ailment for its cure.

It is taught in a series of levels called degrees through physical classes and students go through a process called ‘Reiki initiation‘ in which a Reiki Teacher transfers  the ability to use Reiki(energy) for the purpose of Reiki Treatment.

First Degree Reiki is for Reiki beginners and participants in this level learn how to do Reiki treatments on self and others, mostly family and friends. A gap of three months is mandatory before starting Second Degree Reiki.

Second Degree Reiki is for professional Reiki Practitioners and participants learn to do Reiki Treatments on others in a professional setup. They also learn how to do Distance Treatments and Habit Treatments through the use of Reiki symbols and sounds. A gap of another three months is mandatory before starting Master Degree Reiki.

The final level is called Reiki Master Degree and participants learn how to teach and initiate people into each level of Reiki. They are trained not only to teach Usui Shiki Ryoho but also to carry on the legacy of Mrs Hawayo Takata through their Reiki lineage, the line of teachers tracing back to the founder of Usui Shiki Ryoho. In an authentic Reiki teaching, usually there are about 10-12 teachers between the participants and their teacher if the teacher was trained in 2026.

A Reiki Treatment, usually 60 minutes long consists of a Reiki Practitioner passing Reiki(energy) into the recipient’s body and organs affected by a problem(disease) through touch or just a few inches above the private parts.

As the tradition set by Mrs Takata, the client lies down on a Reiki/ massage table while s/he relaxes through the treatment accompanied by soft relaxing music or silence. The discussions about the problem being treated happens both before and after the treatment and the practitioner records both problems and progress.

You feel warm Reiki(energy) passing through the practitioner’s palms and a good Reiki Treatment should leave you feeling relaxed, energized and well rested.
